Get Snappy - Aishwarya Rai
Had played a negative character in Rajkumar Santoshi's 'Khakee' affected your career in any way?
Of course not. Raiji is a brilliant filmmaker, and the only reason to accept this roel was the dynamism of the character. If she is bad, then she is bad. There is no explanation and sympathy alibi to justify her crime. If she dies in one shot, that's how many criminals die every day. You don't necessarily have to face a dozen bullets and gasp in the arms of your lover. I read in a review that 'Ash had a bad hair-do!' But my learned critic didn't realize that how can a lady have a proper hair-do when she is travelling with those cops throughout the journey?
Due to my accident during the shooting of 'Khakee', I couldn't provide necessary dates to Raiji, as he required combination dates of all the stars for his film. He had to finish the film within a time frame, so I think it is okay. We all are happy teh way it shaped up. I would also like to thank Mr. Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan who extended their support. I am looking forward to working with Raiji again.
Is it true that you are shifting your base from Bollywood to Hollywood?
What rubbish! In world of globalization, I am open to all kinds of' good' movies. I am not the first Indian actor to make my foray into Hollywood films. It is true that I have been offered a couple of projects and my secretary Simone Sheffield Mery! Streep has been postponed till September. The film is an English remake of the director's critically acclaimed French drama. I play the role of a young woman who is helped to recovery by Streep's character, after being badly beaten by street thugs.
But my first Hollywood production would be Roland Joffe's 'Singularity' opposite Brandon Fraser, to be produced by Warner Bros. Studios, in May and my first English language film would be Gurinder Chaddha's 'Bride and Prejudice.'
With so many Hollywood offers, what would be your priority?
Any day Indian cinema will be my priority. I am again working with Rituparno Ghosh in his maiden Hindi venture 'Raincoat' opposite Ajay Devgan and also in Samir karnik's 'Kyon HO Gaya Na? with Vivek Oberoi. I have also been approached by Pritish Nandy Films. I have couple of other offers from Bollywood and most of them are good. To be precise, I would balance my dates and would work in all kinds of cinema.
Why did you turn down 'The Rising' when Bobby Bedi was willing to revise your role after all that controversy?
Yes, Bobby did approach me for thet socond time after sending me an apology for whatever he had done. I was out shooting for Gurinder's film when the Indian press had a gala time in blowing this issue out of proportion. This kind of incident happens every day in our industry and no one even bothers to talk about it. But when the issue took a colossal shape, I clarified with my version, published in your magazine.
Later on, when they approached me with the script, I refused to be a part of the film because they were just going to begin the shooting. At that point of time, I didn't think it would be fair to be a part of such magnum opus. I had even asked director Ketan Mehta to justify my role in the film, which he didn't. So we parted amicably wishing them good luck.
