Get Snappy - Tusshar Kapoor
What does a film like 'Khakee' do for you as an actor?
Firstly it's sheer happines when you are appreciated. But my friends tell me I'm much more at peace after 'Khakee', more chilled out now. After my first film 'Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai' which did well, there were few ups and downs.
Now that you've been appreciated, you're so much at peace with your position as an actor. This film has done for me more than my biggest and only hit, my solo hero debut. Yes, I would certainly think so. It's very important for an actor to have his first film do well. 'Khakee" done well but it's not a solo film of mine. But this film has done the trick which none of my other films could manage for me.
Would you attribute it purely to your growth as an actor?
It's the presentation, my growht as an actor, and what the director did. There was a rounding of the character, where it begins and where it ends, that helped a lot. It wasn't something entirely run of the mill. It was so many things. Although I feel I worked as hard in my first film, of course the years of experience makes a difference, there's a little bit of maturity and then then you've got a brilliant director as well. Also watching people around you, your co-stars

Has the film translated in terms of more films?
Honestly, it's not so immediate but the quality of offers that are coming now are much better. And the way people look a you when you go out, even within the film industry, the way they meet you is so much more accepting. The key feeling is that I've earned respect with this film. With this role, people have begun to feel, 'Ok, he's not like everyone. He's not so run of the mill. Take him seriously.' That's the expression that I see on people's faces.
You're working on Ram Gopal Varma's 'Gaayab'. With Antara Mali playing heroine, does that affect your standing in that set-up?
Not at all. They were very positive about me form the time 'Gaayab'. began. Ramu always told me, "Mark my words, 'Gaaya' is going to change the way people perceive you as an actor." Recently he told my director Prawaal that he thought it was going to be 'Gaayab', but now 'Khakee' had done it. He was always very excited about my work. I mean, he signed me after four of my films didn't do well yaar, that takes a lot of guts. Look at the films he makes, I really needed it then. Even when it was narrated to me. the film was centered around me completely. It was the title role. Playing the invisible man. Ramu was certain that he could work on me as the character, the way he walks, the way he talks.
There are so many other actors who have an image going for them. With some of the actors, they have the 'seen it all, done it all' look. And Ramu said, "I can't work on them as far as this character is concerned. You're new, you're raw, and you haven't created an action or a romantic image so we can work on you with that. " So Ramu was comfortable with me because of those reasons and he was very strong about that. And I needed an RGV film the most.
Will 'Gaayab' be your next release?
No. It'll be 'Shart', an old film of mine which I finished work on a year back. 'Shart' is produced by Trivikrama Rao and directors first Hindi film. And my co-star are Gracy Singh and Amrita Arora. It's a solo hero, commercial, romantictrinagle centered around a bet, for family audiences and especially womenfolk. It's a different genre, not a science fiction film like Gaayab'. 'Gaayab' is now 75 percent done and it'll release in May.
I don't know how people will receive 'Shart'. If it works, it'll be good, but even if it doesn't, 'Khakee' will carry me on longe than that. I have that optimism. Some films leave their mark and are everlasting, 'Khakee' is among them and will be counted as one of Raijis best films. It was commercially successful too, so that'a big plus. After 'Gaayab, I'll be starting my sister's film in May, to be directed by Satish Kaushik. Though, post 'Khakee', I haven't signed any more films though I've been listening ot stories.
