On Cloud nine - Lara Dutta
Stylish, sexy and smart. This is the combination that best describes former miss universe Lara Dutta who is now enjoying the world of bollywood. This ideal combination of beauty and brains wears confidence on her sleeve.
You had once said that you won't do too many films. But today you have a lot in your kitty.
No, my quote wasn't meant to be taken in that way. There are plenty of actresses and films to go around for everyone. The films that I have, have given me a variety of roles which excite me. Producers didn't think, "Oh, she is Miss Universe, so let's make her a glam doll with a westernised image." It is a wonderful feeling to know that people can perceive you in all these different kinds of ways. Whoever I have worked with so far has been happy with me and I am satisfied that I have been able to live up to their expectations.
Your item number in Khakee was HOT! Are you comfortable with item numbers?
I love songs and I did that item number because it was a particularly good song. It has been picturised well and presented even better. Ultimately, it bridged a gap between my releases. Many people loved the song as well as my dance, which was a mixture of soft and hard moves. I enjoyed the experience. Of course, it's obvious that the item number in Khakee gave me a lot of popularity and publicity.
Do you feel apprehensive about being affixed with an 'Item Girl' girl tag?
Not exactly! I'm not fishing for item numbers per se for I have plenty of them in my own films. I'm also very confident of proving myself in varied roles. I am lucky that I am already a year old in this industry and have had two releases last year Andaaz and Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost. I tasted success. I am grateful to Andaaz for that, and faced a setback with Mumbai Se.... which is something I can learn from. It's important to be prepared for hits as well as flops as they are a part and parcel of one's career in this industry. I'd love to always have a hit but then I am sensible to realize that not every film can be successful. It's important that I don't restrict myself to playing roles just like that, because it was a hit. I'm having a great time doing all the roles.
But both, in Andaaz as well as in Mumbai Se.. you played a glamour girl.
Today I have Boney Kapoor's No Entry, Indra Kumar's Masti which are comedies. Then there are Vikram Bhatt's film, both action thrillers with roles for me that give me an opportunity to do all sorts of things. Then I have Aan and Bardasht too. I have had meetings with a few other makers like Prakash Jha for Rajneeti but nothing is finalized yet. I might also like to work with directors I have admired in the past like Vidhu Vinod Chopra besides bigwigs like Subhash Ghai, Karan Johar, Yash Chopra who are everyone's dream directors and Ram Gopal Varma whose ways of thinking are novel. I was working out details of a film with him but dates didn't work out and I am terribly disappointed to have lost out on an opportunity to work with him. Today I can take my pick from good films so I don't want to do a film where I have three scenes and four songs. It is challenging for me as an actress to get up every morning and do something that is exciting. For me, a filmmaker is the most important ingredient of a film because he shapes and presents the film to the audiences.
You have done some stunts in Elaan.
Yeah. We have shot this scene in Venice in minus 20 degrees and two feet of snow. We were to shoot in Cairo initially but then the schedule changed and we found ourselves in these mountains. We did some lovely action scenes there and and thankfully the director and producer were intelligent enough not to put me in itsy bitsy costumes. The schedule was gruelling and quite tough.
Money versus roles has always been a struggle for actors. What is more important for you?
When I go to work I never think about the cheque I would get at the end of the day. I never thought like that while modelling either. But I am not saying that money isn't important - it is. We all work so hard in the sun, rain and cold. In the film line you get good money, name, fame and status. All these are important but most important is the passion and drive towards the work that one does. I haven't gone to an acting school yet I feel that your inner self, inner creativity should reflect in your work. And I get good money for good roles. In this industry a heroine gets all kinds of movies, you have producers who give you your market price, some over pay you while other big names sign you for just a rupee. I think one needs to maintain a balance where one makes money plus has a legacy of films to talk about when one leaves the industry. If people see my films after 20 years and say that I was good in them - that's enough for me too!
