Do you ever fast or go on a diet?
For many of us, actresses and models, food is a source of constant anxiety and dread. There are some who obsess over everything they put in their mouths, feel guilty for eating what they love, and then berate themselves for letting food rule their lives. But I have noticed one thing, depriving yourself is the worst thing you can do if you are trying to keep your weight under check. The only way to lose weight for good, I now believe, is to forget dieting all the time and give in to the body's instinctive food needs. That doesn't mean scarfing down the entire contents of your fridge, but it does mean eating what you want when you are truly hungry, and not feeling awful about it.
Are there any forbidden foods for you?
You crave what's forbidden, and when you finally give in, chances are you will overeat and feel guilty afterwards. Once you know you can eat whatever you want, you'll find that the thrill of being in the forbidden area is gone, but so is the misery of feeling you are out of control. Hence no forbidden foods for me other than alcohol, tobacco or drugs!
What about food cravings?
I get quite content with just a few bites of anything sinful, and don't lie awake at night trying to chase away the siren call of the pastries.
Do you manage to eat your meals on time?
Yes I make sure I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on time. If I tend to get hunger pangs in between, I take the same amount of food I eat in two or three meals and divide it up into five mini meals a day.
How do you manage to keep fit?
We all have been told over and over again that exercise is the most effective way to lose weight because it increases your metabolic rate and burns unused fat stores. But a regular exercise regime also leads to good changes in eating habits.
So you have a strict fitness regime?
Long, moderately paced exercise is my secret. Sometimes I choose an aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, biking, swimming or skipping, and do it at a moderate intensity for around 45 minutes, three times a week.
How can one stop obsessing about one's weight?
Learning to short-circuit obsessive thinking is critical if you want to stop thinking of food as evil and tormenting yourself for enjoying every iota of it. Also get off the scale. One has to bury the habits that reinforce the diet mentality. That includes weighing yourself every now and then, and other stupid rituals I have seen people doing, like drinking a diet soda with chocolate cake to cancel out the calories. Your friends may accusingly stare at you for ordering pizzas with extra cheese. Ignore them, and tell yourself (and them) that you've got it under control. And practice refusing food if you are not hungry, especially on days you are doing nothing.
