The Power or Silence!
'Paper Tiger', 'Casanova', 'Action Jackson'... he's earned many nicknames walking down the aisle of his career. His women spoke ill about him, critics ripped apart his acting skills... yet Akshay Kumar never retaliated against anything or anyone. 'Let it pass', was his mantra all along. And it is this philosophy that has helped him sail through the toughest of tides.
Apart from his films Aan- Men at Work and Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, Akshay has been in the news lately for another reason - his affair with his childhood love : martial arts. Thanks to his television series Seven Deadly Arts showing seven different martial arts being telecast on the National Geographic channel 25% increase in the enrolement of the youth to these arts, around the nation. And the expert is gleaming with joy for having contributed to the arts that have made him what he is today.
Though you'd read, seen and heard a lot about your idol Jackie Chan, what was most striking when you met him in person?
It was his human side! The way he walked up to me, greeting me warmly, taking me around his office , showing me the traier of his latest film which has yet to be released....all this was touching and has left a lasting impression on my mind. His honesty reflects in his behaviour.
What did your talks mainly revolve around?
Since both of us do not use stuntmen but perform our own stunts, we were discussing the thrill, the excitement, the danger involved in the challenging acrobatics that we perform on the sets.
Being a father today do you think it's worth risking your life ?
No, I don't! I know that. I'd even decided I'd cut down on them because Twinkle is always worried about me all the time. But when I'm asked if I want to perform a stunt, I just cannot refuse to do it. I cannot explain to anyone the thrill I get jumping fron great heights or doing something that's not normal.
What is it that fascinates you the most about martial arts?
The concept of 'fighting without fighting' is what draws me closest to it. People think it is about violence, it is about kicking higher than your opponent and many such frivolous concepts. But all this is totally untrue. Martial arts, in more ways than one, actually helps you to come closer to your soul. Helps you learn the power of letting go of all the wordly myths that come along with its existence. It helps you relize the power of meditation. It is because of this art that I rarely get agitated about anything in life.
But there may be times when your silence can be misinterpreted as your weakness. Have you given it a thought?
My silence never been taken as my weakness. There were a lot of nasty things spoken and written about me, but I never lost my cool and retaliated. It wouldn't be right of me to talk ill about woman(women) I'd once loved, so I let it all pass me by. And believe me, my silence has held me in good stead. I believe, at the end of the day, I'm only answerable to my conscience. If I'm clear in my heart, I've no qualms about what the world thinks about me. Today, with a great family and a career going great guns, I can't ask for anything more. Apart from this, as my talent is being taken seriously today , I have the last laugh.
What is i that kept you going in your toughest times?
I had four major fluctuations in my career until now. And each time I hit a low, I was pushed into a corner, I came back with more vengeance and motivation. I feel this is how life should be because it keeps you on your toes all the the time. I recollect, it was during one of these low phases when I was shooting outdoors for a two- hero project. My co-star was just a hit film old compared to my seven consecutive flops. I learnt the producer had put him up in a suite, while I was given a simple room. It hurt tremendously, but I'm grateful to the Almighty that even in times of sheer adversity, I never cracked up. At times like this, I retired into my shell and waited for my time to come.
Having enacted almost all kinds of roles by now, what is it that motivates you to sign a role now?
My character has to be interesting enough! There's something new that the role should offer me. Like Dhadkan, Hera Pheri, Ajnabee, Jaanwar, Sangharsh... they were all varied roles that gave me a platform. Though the romance genre rules the overseas market, I am not sucked doing chiched romantic roles. Fine, a dollar is bigger than a rupee, but there's no value that can be attached to one's creative satisfaction.
Tell us about your comic flick, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge.
It's the first time I'm working with Salman (Khan) and I like the chemistry we share. I'm sure the audiences will accept us too. I saw the film while dubbing for it and liked what I saw.
What is the best thing about fatherhood?
The warm huf that I get from my son aarav when I reached home after a hard day's work is what makes my life complete!
What do you most like about Twinkle
Her Honesty!
You were very close to your father. Now he is no more on a spiritual level, do you still feel connected with him?
Whether people believe or not, there are decisions that I take with his consent.
