Single Determined and Raring to Go - Isha Koppikar
Tell us how did you begin your career in the world of modelling?
I first modelled when I was a year old, for an international magazine called Life. I was the cover gurl! They wanted to capture an Indian naming ceremony, so I was selected. They actually clicked the cradle with my name against it, including the entire ceremony, with me on the cover.
What about the song that made you famous? How did that happen?
Ram Gopal Verma was looking for someone at the time. He happened to see me on the cover of a magazine called JLT (Just Like that) and I suppose that's how he picked me. It was all about being at the right place at the right time.
What made you decide that films were where you wanted to make a mark?
I was not very keen, initially. I wanted to become a doctor, but as I continued to model, there were all kinds of people who said I had potential. They said I could do a lot more than advertisements, so I decided to give it a shot. I was a little apprehensive about doing the song, at first, as the industry is notorious for typecasting. But then, working with someone like Ram Gopal Verma, who does justice to every frame, was difficult to give up. I had complete faith in him. He also convinced me that I wouldn't get a raw deal. He made a monster out of me. To date, no item gurl has been on a hoarding. I was given more coverage than the film's heroines!
If you really want something badly, how far would you go to achieve it?
I will make sure I get it. I will fight, to the extent where others believe in me. When I did Khallas, I was suddenly noticed. After Krishna Cottage and my performances, people have begun to digest me. There are always hurdles, with an easy path and a wrong path. After Khallas, there were a lot of obstacles. I was being offered more item numbers and, also because of the fact that I was not from a filmi background, I was not offered the best roles. Initially, I did cameos and all kinds of things. I came to become a heroine though, not an item gurl. So, I have to make myself more visible. I am trying to do all I can and that answers your question.
When and how did your luck change?
It did not happen overnight. It has taken its own time. Luckily, there were directors who had faith in me who kept giving me films. I have been very lucky that every one I worked with has wanted to work with me again.
Do you have a godfather?
No. The only father I have is my God up there. Nobody has helped me, so I will not share my success with anyone. I have done it on my own. Ram Gopal Verma took me because I was good. Even though Ram Gopal Verma knew me, he only offered me an item number. If he thought I was better than what I was, he would have offered me a film. I am absolutely indebted to him, of course, but it's all a business here. You survive only if you are good at what you do.
How do you decide to take on a role? Do you make your own decisions?
I take my own decisions. I am my own master. I don't consult anyone because my parents do not know anything about the industry. My father is a doctor and my mother used to work with the Bank of India.
Is there anyone in the film industry you respect?
Shah Rukh Khan.
Whom would you aspire to be like?
Amitabh Bachchan. The women all get married and go away, which is something I don't like. Why do they lose thier charm and novelty when they marry? The men last, don't they? If Hollywood can do it, why not Bollywood?
What has experience taught you about making a relationship work?
Just let be. Don't try to control. Allow the person to breathe and he will allow you to, as well.
If you could, what would you change about yourself?
I would bring my temper a little under control. I am a volcano. I erupt and cool down vey fast.
If you had three wishes....
I would want to be born into the same family and die a very successful human being. I would also love it if God could make this world a better place to live in.
Are you romantically involved with anyone?
No.
