Get Snappy - Sunil Shetty
A string of releases, both hits and flops, and a stash of films in his goodie bag, yet to happen. Sunil Shetty, Bollywood businessman is away for a long vacation, along with shooting abroad for hot one, not two but three films. Before he leaves, we catch him at his snappy best.
What do you have to say about the repercussions that your film 'Aan' had on the law enforcement services in the city?
I know a whole lot of the senior cops who've seen and appreciated the film tremendously. It's the director's vision, and the writer's studied vision of what it is. Some people are picking on irrelevant issues. Earlier, every film has shown cops in a bad light. Here, we're not glorifying the police. But at the same time, respecting what they've done. We're talking about the few good men in the force who think positively. And the black sheep are there in every profession. Statements that there's no bribe that's taken, come on man, we have to all grow up and get real. If we say that there's no corruption in the force, what are so many cops in jail for then? It doesn't make sense at all. Those who're talking don't matter and these things. rather than affect the film, only end up hyping the film with the kind of publicity that comes from anything that is unreal. It's a man's film, a hard hitting film, with excessive action, but then it was designed for an audience like that. 'Aan' is not a superhit, but it is a B plus film all over the country.
You had said that 'Main Hoon Na' was like a launch film for you almost. Has it translated tangibly into better films for you? The film worked for Shah Rukh and Sushmita the most.
It's worked the maximum for Sushmita because the media is writing about it. But then, the kind of films and roles that are coming to me, are big and I'm extremely happy about. Even in 'Lakeer', while the film didn't work, I was appreciated. After which came 'Aan' where again I got a tremendous amount of appreciation. And it's 'Main Hoon Na' that's given me that pedestal because so many more people saw the film. Clearly 'Main Hoon Na' has got me the kind of films that are unreal.
After the flop of your maiden production 'Khel', what are your expectations from your next venture 'Rakht'?
Big from 'Rakht'. 'Khel' was big too for us, but here I mean hopefull from the success point of view also. With 'Khel', if people saw the film and wrote it off completely, I'd have said yes, we made a mistake. Unfortunately, it released at a time when it got no opening at all.
That hurt tremendously. I think 'Rakht' will cover up for all that. It is a film based on the supernatural. It's very, very interesting. It's not a film that is supposed to scare you out of your guts but it's a film that will hold you. It's got a great cast, a huge cast. All of them are known faces, who have their own audiences.
Why have you used Abhishek Bachchan in a teensy song only in the film? Does he have a role to speak of?
Abhishek has performed the blues song 'one love' and he's so good, he's unreal. It's not just the song. There's a wee bit of a role in that too. But that's not what we're selling the film on. The distributors didn't even know till now. Abhishek is by far one of the coolest dancers, the best I would say amongst the entire new lot. They're great dancers, you can't take it away from kids like Hrithik and Vivek and all, but the coolest dancer with maximum attitude, like a Ricky Martin or an Enrique, is Abhishek.
What films are you as an actor doing?
The films that have been announced are 'Dus' with Anubhav Sinha, which we're shooting in Canada, Satish Kaushik's "Phir Hera Pheri', David Dhawan's film with Sanjay Dutt and me (produced by Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria). Priyan's 'Hulchul' is done, and 'Blackmail' too. 'Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav' is complete and post production is going on. I've been listening to many interesting scripts but I'll finalise after I get back.
