Get Snappy - Neha Dhupia
Whether for her famous bikini scene in her debut 'Qayamat', or her courage to do all the needful for the publicity and promotion of her second, And bold fil 'Julie', Neha Dhupia has always made news. But reports that she's doing small roles in films like 'Rakht' and Ekta Kapoor's 'Kitne Kool Hain Hum', raised many an eyebrow, questioning if she's making the wrong moves...
Despite a high-profile successful debut in 'Qayamat', what prompted you to keep a low profile post that?
It was a deliberate and conscious effort not to over-expose myself in the media. Then, I got busy with 'Julie', my second film, and concentrated solely on it. Now that it's ready for release, with another multi-starrer 'Rakht', it makes more sense to be visible in the media and promote your films.
In the initial promos, 'Julie' comes across more as a family film, with the romance et al. Isn't it misleading the audience, who were all the while led to believe that it's a bold film about a prostitute?
There's no attempt to mislead the audience at all. Though it's a bold film about a prostitute, what you're talking about is her existence before she became a prostitute. Because before that, she had a normal life. The film traces her journey from being a girl-next-door to becoming a prostitute. It sure has some bold scenes that are a vital part of the script, but these scenes are executed aesthetically. You won't feel embarrassed if you're watching the film with your family.
With your second film being a heroine-oriented one, what prompted you to play a comparatively small role in 'Rakht'?
From the beginning, I have emphasised on quality rather than quantity. It's not the length of the role that matters, but what scope it has for me to perform as an actress. We're all like concrete blocks in 'Rakht', it would seem incomplete without even one of us. It's important to perceive the role in its individuality to judge the scope it offers to perform, and also to see it in totality as to how important it is to the film. I'm very happy to have worked with a director like Mahesh Manjrekar, who guides you to give your best to the film.
If 'Rakht' is an exception, then what influenced your decision to do an equally small role in Eakta Kapoor's 'Kitne Kool Hain Hum'? desperation?
Firstly, Kite Kool Hain Hum' is a rather funny film about two guys, both losers, and I play Ritesh Deshmukh's Romantic interest in it. Again, it's not the length of the role that matters, but whether one makes the most of it. It's really a very hilarious script and I'm sure the audience will like it. Besides, Ekta is a fabulous producer and is known to promote and hype her films very well. And trust me. 'It's not as small a role as you think it is.
From debuting opposite Ajay Devgan in 'Qayamat' to playing Ritesh Deshmukh's love interest seems quite a comedown.
It's nothing like that. For me it's growth as an actress from my first film to the last one I signed. Ajay is a fantastic actor and a big star, while Ritesh is just a couple of films old. But ultimately, it's the script that chooses its actors. It's not right to refuse a good film just because you've debuted opposite a big star.
