Pop patriotic anthems
As India celebrates its 58th Independence Day, it's almost ironic that Bollywood's report card of pop patriotic films has been abysmal: LOC, Lakshya, Deewar and AB Tumhare Hawalein Watan Saathiyo Not surprisingly, it becomes tough to remember mintfresh pop patriotic anthems made in Bollywood this year. Musicians look back in time to choose their favourite filmi patriotic number.
For Anu Malik, who composed for Border, Refugee and the more recent LOC, "independence numbers needn't have Vande matram kind of words, they should be subtle. Like Paanchi nadiya from Refugee, it touches your heart. Among the evergreens, Mere des ki dharti (upkar) and of course Vande mataram (Anandmath)."
Sonu Nigam's vote goes to Sarfaroshi ki tamanna (first played for Shaheed and then The Legend of Bhagat Singh) and Rang de basanti: "I loved those numbers. A.R. Rahman's Bharat humko (Roja) is another song I like." Shankar Mahadevan feels that nothing can beat the National Anthem "I get goosebumps when I listen to Vande mataram and my kind of songs are: Kandhe se (Lakshya) or Ae mere watan ke log." Among his favourite patriotic number, Abhijeet lists "Hum logon ko samajh sako (Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani), Paanchi nadiya (Refugee) Hum Hindustani (Hum Hindustani)."
So, on I-Day, what's your favourite song?
