The hysteria, the adulation and the whistles, Priyanka Chopra is getting more than her share for her recent performance in 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'. But the path to stardom is strewn with thorns. Controversies, struggles and working up a sweat. Not one to happily talk your ear off, Priyanka gets shappy.
Two releases back to back, 'Asambhav' and 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', but only one succeeded. Do you think the earlier went seriously wrong, or were the efforts more tilted towards 'MSK' since it boasted of such an established cast?
'Asambhav' and 'MSK' are both my films, it's like asking if my right eye is more important than my left. Yes, I myself am surprised that 'Asambhav' didn't do well since it's a Rajiv Rai film. He's, after all, a superior maker. As for 'MSK', there was pressure while working with such great actors like Akshay and Salman, since I had to match their presence and not just come across as a wallflower.
After making a splash with a sex siren image, you're apparently turning a new leaf in manner of Priyanka bani Parvati. Do you think this new avatar will work?
I know I established myself as a siren with my debut film, 'Andaaz', but I can't be playing that forever. I'm consciously altering my image to fit the stereotypical Hindi film heroine, which is why I tried the whole sweet-girl-next-door get-up in 'MSK'. I'm not uncomfortable with the 'hot' tag, but I don't want be known as just that. Besides, everybody's doing the whole bare all number. I want to be versatile.
There's much media speculation concerning your walkout from Anees Bazmi's 'Benaam' with Ajay Devgan. you're being tagged unprofessional for signing and signing out.
I signed 'Benaam' three years ago when Dinesh Patel and Kuku Dinesh Patel and Kuku Kohli were producing it. Since then the two spilt. Now, the story was changed, it was suddenly a two-heroine project and Anees Bazmi was directing it. I had my reservations about a few stray scenes, which I requested to be changed. I don't think I'm big enough to go on the sets later and crib in front of seniors like Aneesji that I can't do a scene. In all this hotch-potch, dates were becoming a big issue, since my world tour's approaching. As of now we're trying to work things out.
You've been replaced by Esha Deol in Karan Johar's next because Karan was apparently miffed with you. The story goes that you called Karan when he was with his ailing father, the late Yash Johar, at the hospital, asking him to reconsider you for Lara's role instead of the one you were offered. True?
That's totally ridiculous. I'm not so inhuman. I was aware of Yashji's ailment. In fact, I even went to the hospital to visit him with my father. And Karan said, 'it was very sweet of you to drop in'. There are no bitter feelings between Karan and me.
Don't you feel regretful that you've missed out on a Johar project? Also' won't it prove hazardous to your career to refuse a Karan Johar, who's considered a kingpin in Bollywood?
I do feel extremely regretful about not being able to do Karan's film, but it can't be helped. I'd be in a soup if I were to leave my other commitments for Karan's extended outdoor, which was to take off soon. There was already enough controversy with the Anees Bazmi film. As far as ego hassles are concerned, I don't think Karan's like that at all. He's a fabulous person, he realized it was not my mistake and was very cool about the whole issue.
