Sing like a music lover
A leading music store in the Capital. Mellifluous violin notes suddenly fill the air, replacing thumping music. The event is the music launch of Pamela Rooks' English film Dance Like a Man, an adaptation of Mahesh Dattani's play of the same name.
The event marks the end of a week of launches in the Capital. There was Gurinder Chadha's much-awaited Bride and Prejudice, Anil Sharma's patriotic offering Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyo, and finally, Dance Like a Man. And while it is devoid of the hype associated with the other two, there is no dearth of excitement as the cast make an appearance at the venue.
The ladies are first director Rooks, best known for her celluloid adaptation of Khushwant Singh's "Train To Pakistan", National Award winner and Bharat-natyam artiste Shobana, and debutant Anoushka Shankar, daughter of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. As the trio poses pretty, in walk actors Arif Zakaria and Samir Soni, to a warm welcome.
Dance Like a Man is the story of a dancer couple (played by Shobana and Arif) and their daughter (Anoushka) who follows in her parents footsteps. Sameer plays her fiance.
Music directors missing
The ones missing in the celebrations are Ganesh and Kumaresh, the hugely talented violin duo from the South, who debut as music directors with this film. The album is primarily a blend of traditional music and Western rhythms, a combination the brothers are famous for. Music Today, which has produced three fusion albums by the brothers earlier, has brought out this album too. Incidentally, Ganesh is known as a vocalist too, and the album includes a solo by him.
Much bonhomie is seen among the cast and the director as they field questions from the media and a bevy of admirers. Thanks of her award-winning role in Revathy's Mitr - My Friend, Shobana has many new admirers in the Capital. So the microphone keeps going back as question after question is tossed at her.
The others get a share of the limelight too. Anoushka is asked to do an impromptu 'adavu' when her song in the film is played. Noticeable taken aback, she pleads memory loss till a charming Sameer comes to her aide, and the couple do a few graceful movements together. Arif, luckily, is spared any such request, though he did undergo months of training in Bharatnatyam for the role!
The film, which has won the National Award for the Best English film, 2003, is about to kiss the silver screen.
