I'm most uncomfortable wearing a shirt
Q. Why are you so intimidating?
Ans. I'm not. I'm very straightforward. If I don't like a question, I won't answer. If you want me to answer a question which I don't like, I will simply throw the question back at you. Then you will be left without an answer. As the adage goes, only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches.
Q.You love taking digs at the Press?
Ans. It's nothing like that. I have been constantly getting bad press. I'm not the media's blue-eyed boy. But, right now, even I can't understand why the Press is being so nice to me. The mood is like abhi isko thoda chadhao, phir vapas girayenge (let's raise him up now, only to put him down later)... But then, everyone from Amitabh Bachchan to Rajesh Khanna to Vinod Khanna has faced the flak. Except, of course Lata Mangeshkar who has gone high up her career and the Press has not written anything bad about her.
Q. Is there any reason for the media to behave the way it does?
Ans. I guess, I'm too independent as a person. I will never be cowed down by anyone. My independence is after labelled as arrogance.
Q.You are much senior to the current crop of actors...
Ans. But, I'm still doing romantic leads. I'm still playing the college kid! People still come and watch my movies. In fact, more so now.
Q.Why do you think more people like watching your films now?
Ans. I don't know. I must have done some good deeds and I'm reaping the benefit now.
Q.Seriously speaking, what is the secret of your success?
Ans. You know, the day I discover it, I'll overdo it and try to get all the good stuff only for me.
Q.Why are you essentially known as a topless wonder?
Ans. I am most uncomfortable wearing a shirt. Basically, somewhere, I am still a child. Why, I have even gone to a five-star hotel without wearing a shirt!
Q.As a socially-conscious actor, are there any scenes that you avoid doing?
Ans. I wouldn't like to do love-making scenes.
Q.And what if your character is shown as a smoker or a drinker?
Ans. Sure, I will do it. I am just enacting a character. But having said that, I also maintain that smoking is bad. Moreover, anything negative attracts people easily. If people are not supposed to consume such things, then let the government ban these products.
Q.What is the most underrated virtue, according to you?
Ans. The act of being good. Simple things are often misconstrued as stupid or just show-off tactics. For example, when a person offers his seat to an old man/woman or somebody helps an accident victim or someone covers a manhole ar a ditch... these acts are laughed at and ignored by other people in society. What immediately grabs attention are negative things, like someone finishing off a bottle of alcohol in a jiffy or smoking stylishly.
Q.And an overrated virtue?
Ans. When someone does a good deed for selfish reasons and makes it out to be a noble gesture. There is nothing like selfless service. I believe that every good deed is done out of some fear. It's some kind of prayaschit (atonement). Ironically, people then go around saying, "What a great guy, so selfless".
Q. Is that why you don't talk about your good deeds?
Ans. What is there to talk about? (Referring to press reports of him having saved an accident victim), anyone in that situation would have done the same. Wouldn't you do it?...It's the most normal thing to do.
Q. Why doesn't the media talk about how good you are?
Ans. Why should anybody talk about it. I can't talk for myself. I will be a fool to go around and say, Hey, what a great guy I am!
Q. Tomorrow, if people do not recognise you, would it bother you?
Ans. It might bother me. But then, I will never go out and say, "Mere zamaane mein films aise hote thhe..." The minute someone revels in nostalgia, it means his time is up.
Q. How would you like to be remembered?
Ans. If people just remember the one per cent of good that I have done and emulate it. And if they
also remember the one percent of bad that I have done and refrain from it, I will feel that my life has been successful.
Q. Why did you do a film like Phir Milenge, which is so different from the usual potboilers?
Ans. What's wrong with doing a different film? We are doing films, entertaining people and getting paid. It's important that at some point, one does things for others. I hope Phir Milenge has benefitted the younger generation. What better platform than a film which is shown in the theatres and later on satellite channels, and talks about HIV? In movies, there have been references to brain tumour, cancer and heart disease. So, why not HIV?
Q. But hasn't HIV been much talked-about, thanks to people like Parmeshwar Godrej and Richard Gere?
Ans. These people are only heard in high society and the corridors of power. For instance, only industrialists would know about Godrej's efforts. People who watch Hollywood movies may have heard of Richard Gere. As it is, high society audiences are aware of things like HIV. It is the interiors where the awareness is most needed. In our society, parents don't talk to children about HIV, as the topic of sex is involved. Phir Milenge was a beautiful and mature film. It is not a sex film like Julie, Hawas or Murder. I hope parents have watched this film with their kids, and students with their teachers.
Q. Among all your films, which is your favourite?
Ans. Maine Pyar Kiya (produced and directed by Sooraj Barjatiya). It's because of that film that you are still talking to me.
Q. Are you happy as a person?
Yes.
Q. Are you at peace with both the good and bad aspects of your personality?
Yes. In fact, I am happy with the unhappy aspects too. I know this unhappiness will be a source of happiness to me at some other point in life.
Q. What do you want to be reborn as?
Hey, I'm not dead as yet
