On a song and a raga
For many of those who didn't know, Shabana Azmi is not only a fine actress, but also a trained classical singer. "I have trained in classical singing and absolutely love singing," she says. The performer, who played the role of a singer in Tehzeeb and Saaz, will play a Carnatic singer in the forthcoming Morning Raga.
Though already a classical vocalist, the distinguished lady had to take lessons in Carnatic music because of its distinctive style. "Just like one has different forms of dance, there are several forms of music, too. And Carnatic is one of them," says Shabana. "I thought it would be difficult to pick up at first, but I have managed quite well. I am a North Indian myself and Carnatic music originates in the South. Shooting for the film was also a lot of fun," she informs us.
"It was shot around several villages of the East Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh. We loved the cuisine there, and also got to learn a lot about art-the architecture of the region and the beautiful Tanjore paintings, which are also used in the film, were a visual treat!" And will the film be a treat, too? We await the raga.
