Tabu breaks free
Tabassum Naaz (rechristened Tabu) hates routines. After being part of he glamour industry for
more than a decade, Tabu never believes in following rules. In fact Tabu has spent most of her
sabbatical, travelling. "It's eazy to resist temptation. I don't need the money so badly. I only
want to work with people I share good working vibes with. Only genuine, honest film-makers enthuse me. I wanted to take it eazy for a while, so it's been nice."
In fact the last year has been "wonderful" for Tabu who's learnt Spanish (she already speaks
Bangla, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu), travelled all over the US "meeting old friends,"
attended film festivals in Marakesh and venice, watched movies in theatres and not "missed work.
At the end you are just a phone call away."
Tabu was in town recently to attend the closing ceremony of the Digital Film Festival at the
British Council. Tabu who was the jury member of the festival admits that she's loved her new
responsibility. "I watched 1000 digital films, it was fascinating. However, I prefer not to
consider myself in a position to criticise someone's creative work, I know it hurts when you've
put in effort and someone judges you."
Tabu who's signed up to do cousin Zoya Akhtar's directorial debut, Luck By Chance has no problems doing the filmi jhatkas, "I am not snob, I've done my share of commercial films. Last year I did Jaal The Trap and Hawa, those are commercial films. The only reason why we are talking now is because I did Vijaypath, a typical potbolier and one of the biggest hits. Chandni Bar came later," confesses Tabu.
Tabu, a new convert to fitness hits gym at least twice a week (that's probably the secret of her svelte, sleek look), no longer "binges. It's quite a battle eating right, and junking greasy food, but I had to do it." And no, unlike other stars she has no global plans at all. "It's great for a soundbyte to say I'm doing a film in Hollywood, but the reality is Indian actors have along way to go before anyone takes them seriously." That explains why Tabu still enjoys being part of
the mainstream Mumbai moviedom, "I am very happy being part of a world that's given me so much."
