Mughal-e-Azam unfolds in new colours
The Real Mc Coy is back this Diwali. Thespian Dilip Kumar packs the blockbuster punch with the re-release of K.Asif's Mughal-e-Azam. What's new? The epic unfolds in all-colour this time, beefed up with True Dolby 6.1 sound to cater to Gennow tastes.
A bit of history: When K.Asif was ready with Mughal-e-Azam in late fifties, colour technology had just come to India. He wanted to re-shoot the entire film in colour, but as the film was already in the making for almost a decade, his financiers refused. The outcome, as we Know: Mughal-e-Azam was released with just one song picturised in colour, besides the last three reels.
Says Deepesh Salgia, Project Director, restoration and colourization: "In Hollywood old black and white classics are regularly restored in colour for DVD. Since we own the copyright for Mughal-e-Azam, we thought it would be a good idea to revive the film with a contemporary touch, retaining the classic appeal." The entire process, started last October, was done in India and reportedly cost Rs 10 crore-enough to finance a medium budget Hindi film today. Adds Salgia: "If Mughal-e-Azam was to be made today on the same scale, it would cost Rs 200 crore."
Says Ravi Chopra, who plans to restore all seven of B.R. Chopra's black and white classics as colour films. "The biggest challenge is to set a film in colours that suit today's sophisticated sensibilities and yet not lose the orginal mood."
Chopra plans to release Naya Daur in colour soon, but he's pragmatic: "A lot will depend on how Mughal-e-Azam is accepted by today's generation."
