Careergraph of Gracy Singh
Her career so far has seen two huge his and several flops, but Gracy Singh still believes that she'll make her mark in Bollywood.
Starting a career opposite Aamir Khan in the superhit Lagaan was nothing short of a dream debut and Gracy Singh knows she's been very lucky.
But a string of not very successful films later-with the exception of the mega-hit Munnabhai M.B.B.S.- Gracy's hoping that luck hasn't deserted her.
Her latest film, Wajahh-A Reason To Kill, release this week and like any actor awaiting a release this week, and like any actor awaiting a release, the girl with a 'good' image is on tenterhooks, specially since her role is somewhat deeper tahn those she's played before. "Wajahh is a psycho thriller in which I play a very complicated character," she explains. "I'm married to a doctor and am subject to nightmares. Everyone is my enemy. I hope I did justice to the role."
Considering that Wajahh does not boast of big star cast, chances of it doing well seem a little unlikely, "I go by my instinct when it comes to choosing a role and that's why I've made many mistakes and delivered made many mistakes and delivered flops. I need to plan things," admits Gracy. But she does have films like Sukhant Dadda's Churiya, Chanchal and Sunny Deol's Dhool to fall back on later. And meanwhile, she has some very fond memories of the films that have worked for her.
Lagaan, naturally, is top of her list, the film in which she started with Aamir Khan, "Aamir is an actor who prepares himself well before the shot and lives his characters. But I'm someone who believes in acting on the spot. Everything was so eazy for me because I treated him as the character he was playing-he was Bhuvan to me on the sets. And he was always ready to correct my mistakes. The chemistry really worked on the screen," she exults.
After that...well. Her luck didn't really hold. Honey Irani offered her the role of a doctor Armaan, sharing screen space with Anil Kapoor and the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. And it was a flop. Still, her only regret about Armaan is a star-stuck one: "I wish I'd got to work with Mr Bachchan a little longer. And he should not have died in the first half!"
Next, she did Gangajal with Ajay Devgan, a film in which her role could easily be dismissed as guest appearance. Why did she agree to do it? Was it desperation? "No, nothing of that sort. I did Gangajal because I had heard about Prakesh Jha and wanted to be a part of his film. A lot of changes were made on the editing table but I could not back out at that stage. To tell you the truth, I don't regret doing Gangajal. There is no end to learning and I'm happy that I got to work with people like them. My experience was nice and I got to learn things which I could not have learned otherwise," she replies with tact.
Still, however miniscule her role in the film, it was noticed, and led to her next big hit after Lagaan, Munnabhai M.B.B.S. "All of us knew it would do well after we heared the narration," says Gracy. "Not only it was entertaining, it had universal appeal which was bound to make it a hit."
There's no doubt she enjoyed working with Sanjay Dutt who she feels "is sophisticated and a real gentleman." "Sanjay is sharp, spontaneous and a brilliant actor. He's someone who'll meet everyone-from spotboys to his costars-personally, and make them comfortable. He's helpful and genuine, quite different from the image the media has given him," says Gracy with great enthusiasm.
The film took the country by storm. Munnabhai changed the course of Hindi cinema and taught us how to laugh at ourselves, and the systems we follow. Once more, Gracy was dubbed the 'lucky' girl. Two mega hits for a newcomer to the industry, could that really be possible?
But a flop followed the hit. Shart-The Challenge, opposite Tusshar Kapoor, isn't even a memory now. "I don't even know when the film was released," she shrugs, "As an actor I did my job, but everything is not on my shoulders. I guess the film flopped because of poor promotion," she answers honestly.
Honestly and innocence are words that are almost synonymous with Gracy Singh. Doesn't she get tired of being goody-goody all the time? "No. I don't want to expose my body in a vulgar way, and look silly. I've no problems in accepting the fact that I'm traditional and stick to those values," she says firmly.
