Can Ash cross over?
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, who credits Ash with a "queenly presence," is perhaps the only critic in the UK gushing over her performance in Bride & Prejudice. While the movie will be released in the US in December, Ash's apparent reluctance to do intimate scenes and perceived inability to ooze sensuality might just cut short her Hollywood yatra.
Neither here nor here?
Mahesh Bhatt feels Ash has "neither the vitality of Sridevi and Madhuri nor the talent of Smita Patil-she's good-looking but her substance doesn't equal her looks." Similarly, Subhash Ghai said in a recent interview that "she is too focussed on her presentation."
If chan can, so can she:
Satish Kaushik hints taht it's the right time for an Indian actress to make her mark. "The West has started moving beyond sterotypes. Look at jackie Chan. If a Chinese hero can be a big hit, why not an Imdian?" Ronghita Nandy, production, feels "Ash has geneated enough interest to be noticed bigwigs there-she'll break the barrier."
Intimate...checkmate?
Think Hollywood, and bedroom scenes are part of the package, "Hollywood demands sexuality... one can't be a nun there. Even Meg Ryan does it," says Bhatt. But is ash up to it? "If the script demands it, an actor will do it-intimate scenes are also part of acting," says producer Rahul Rawail.
Thanda matlab Ash?
While there's seemimgly no chemistry between Ash and Martin Henderson, even her pairing with 'good friend' Vivek Oberoi in a recent release was without the sparks, "Ash has the figure to enchant everyone," says Raj Kanwar, "Make her stand next to either Tom Cruiseor Sylvester Stallone, she will gel," Adds Rohan Sippy, "Finally, chemistry is the comfort level between the co-stars translated on to the screen."
The actor factor: Rawail says "Ash has grown tremendously in the histrionics department. Today, she's a fine actress." Says Vivek Oberoi of Ash: "In a frame with her , even if one doesn't do anything, it seems that you are acting because she is a great actress." Kanwar points out that Ash "takes her time" to understand a character, "but then she is completely immersed in it."
