The girl who said no to SRK
Television's good girl Gurdeep Kohli hates being 'predictable'. Comes from being the virtuous, self - effacing Dr Juhi in Sanjivani, a weekly soap which has been airing on Star Plus for two years. For Gurdeep, a painter by training (she went to J J School of Arts, Mumbai), a career in television was "never the first choice. I was modelling for pocket - money in college and later when I was asked to audition by Cinevistas I didn't take it seriously. But when Sanjivani was offered to me I was very tempted. Two years down the line I know I was right."
Sanjivani has made Gurdeep a celebrity of sorts and even introduced her to the love of her life, co - star Arjun Punj. While Gurdeep accepts that she owes a lot to the serial which "changed my life for the better and made me famous", she's cagey about Arjun who's a struggling filmstar. "I don'[t feel like talking about my love life at all. Arjun and I share a special relationship, we give each other a lot of space and never interfere in each other's professional lives. He's also my closest friend," she points out.
And how about her cold vibes with Mihir Mishra who plays the romantic lead opposite her: "Who says you have to be best friends with the man you work with? I don't pretend to be Mihir's best buddy but we are amicable and so far we've never had a problem."
Gurdeep also has no regrets about having said 'no' to Ashutosh Gowarikar (for Swades) and Ekta Kapoor for (Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Kasauti Zindagi Kay) in recent times. "I was approached for Swades but I couldn't give out bulk dates so I had to bow out. Othwise who would say 'no' to a Shah Rukh Khan film? As for Ekta, I didn't want to do Kasauti... because the arclight was on Shweta Tiwari and after having played the lead in Sanjivani for two years I didn't want to play second fiddle. Anyway, I don't think I can take on the pressures of a daily soap." Once the make-up's off Gurdeep's regular "party - going girl who's living life to the hilt."
