Reverse Swing!
Truth is stranger than fiction, particularly in Bollywood. The film in question is Pooja Bhatt's Cabaret and the issue is the confirmation of Mallika Sherawat-reportedly out of favour with the Bhatts till recently -as the leading lady. Koena Mitra alleges she was all but confirmed for the role when she came to know Mallika would essay the role.
"Last year I went through screen tests with both Amol Shirde, who was supposed to direct the movie and Pooja Bhatt, who told me that she would give me songs like in Moulin Rogue." The only hitch was that Cabaret, Koena was told would start in 2005. "Pooja was going to begin Paap then." Subsequently, repeated attempts to get in touch with Pooja came to nought. "Another director told me that Pooja wanted Mallika to do the film."
But Pooja Bhatt laughs of all these charges. "Yes, Koena gave a screen-test but so did Sameera Reddy and Moushami among others. These tests took place even before I started Paap. Also, Mallika has not been signed on for the film yet, though she has expressed her willingness. I will begin shooting next year and a decision will be made then." And if you thought that she is dropping a lesser name for someone established, think again for Bhatt claims "I never work with stars. I like to take on people who are raw or have been written off."
Pooja even credits Koena with talent "but she spent less time than the other girls with me."
But Koena's plea for just a phone call from Bhatt to tell her about the film is not going to be answered anytime soon. "I will hesitate to call her or perhaps even recommend her," says Bhatt.
