Ash we'd like to see her
Among the most unflattering things ever written about Aishwarya Rai is the remark from a columnist who saw her at the London premiere of Bride and Prejudice. Her blue Armani dress with a piece of fur at the neckline made Ash look like "a geisha with a poodle slung around her neck," said the journo.
A year and a half ago, style guru Prasad Bidappa had described Ash - in a pink and green dress at Cannes where she was a member of the jury - as a "dowager sofa set".
Last month, at the unveiling of her statue of Madame Tussaud's, guests wondered why Ash hadn't preferred the embroidered red crepe sari worn by her wax likeness over the lace and satin dress she'd chosen for herself.
Clearly, in the opinion of many, Ash has a style problem.
"Aishwarya is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen but anybody who can make her look this bad must have suicidal design tendencies," says Rina Dhaka, among the first to pan Ash for her B&P premiere look.
"Anyone who designs for Aishwarya should know that when she is attending high-profile events, she'll be photographed waist upwards...that fur has absolutely taken over her beautiful body. What's the point of wearing a gown if you are going to hide your chest?" says Dhaka. "I feel she is scared after Neeta Lulla gave her that confusing dress for Cannes 2003...Ash can definitely do with a top line stylist who has the taste to put together outfits from various designers with a level of daring and subtlety" Rohit Gandhi agrees with Dhaka that Ash "definitely needs a stylist."
Tarun Tahiliani feels Ash could go easier on the gowns that she invariably wears abroad.
"Gowns are good for women like Nicole Kidman who are tall and carry them off well." Tahiliani feels Ash would look good in monochromes and Indian designs with a contemporary touch: "slight colour variations and fluted dresses would look good on her, but no, there should definitely be no fur on her."
Rohit Bal is with Tahiliani: "She should go for Indian clothes with a western silhouette. She's in a position to ask any designer..." In the chorus of designer criticism and advice, Manish Malhotra strikes a different note. "If Ash is happy with her choice of clothes, who are we to judge her?" he says.
We won't, as long as the woman we consider the world's most beautiful does not inflict her weird furs on us.
