Raison d' etre
If Bride and Prejudice is generating some bad reviews, let it; I am very proud of it. That's Aishwarya Rai on the criticism of her. The actress claims that text messages and bouquets from well-wishers and plaudits from some of Britain's leading newspapers are bringing a smile to her face.
"Audrey Hepburn's son Sean Hepburn Fererr presented me with a book on his mother in the US.A week later, after the premiere of Bride And Prejudice, I was compared to the great actress and her demeanour by some of Britain's leading newspapers that's quite a coincidence," says Ash.
The lady isn't letting her detractors' "myopic observation" govern her emotional and mental frame-work. "One section of ill-intended people can't reflect India's sentiments," she says, "If there is an intention to pull me down, my well-wishers only get more protective about me. The red carpet has become part of my life now, unlike these people for whom it is just a one-off thing."
Ash believes that the "vicious attacks" on her can't change reality." And the reality is that I've had an incredible time since 2003, when I made a foray into art films with Choker Bali. The Time magazine cover, the prestigious nomination as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival; being counted among the 100 most influential people in the world; being immortalised at Madame Tussaud's wax museum; and being the global face of India...it sounds silly for me to list my achievements, but that's a fact."
While Ash's sartorial sense has invited criticism from many quarets, she's ready with her counter: "On one hand you scoff at Page 3 people for being obsessive about superficial things; on the other hand, you're trying to fashion the young mind on what to be obsessive about. Please don't ignore the substance." In the same vein, Ash hits back at designer Rocky S for his comments on her. "He had the audacity to say I wore a blonde wig and didn;t know to carry it off," she says, "I have worn my hair black and straight all along. This shows the credibility of the designer. These people don't have a clue as to how things function abroad. Giorgio Armani is the ultimate in chic and he has chosen to style me...it's an honour. I was pleased with what he gave me."
Still, some believe that her sartorial sense has never been up to the mark, even during her modelling days. Ash laughs at this. "Whoever said that, has he commented on my accomplishments as strongly? Moreover, I have been clad in saris most of the time. And I was called a vernacular, a behenji then. Now, the sari suddenly seems to have become a sensuous outfit." Has the criticism of her dress sense led to her rethinking her wardrobe? "What do I rethink? That Armani and Shabab Durazi are designing my outfits?" she asks caustically.
Ash also dismisses reports that she is trying hard to move to Hollywood. "I've agreed to scripts and ideas by many filmmakers here, including Raj Kumar Santoshi, Shyam Benegal, Kalpana Lajmi, Ketan Mehta, Rituparno Ghosh and Indra Kumar. Farhan Akhtar has also met me. I am constantly meeting producers, trying to finalise stuff."
