Season of blockbusters
The most auspicious period of the Indian film industry, Diwali, is fast approaching and is bringing some delectable goodies for the audiences. From an actress-the-border romance from the badshah of love stories to a musical, the remake of Michael Douglas's Disclosure and a classic love story coloured and digitally enhanced, there is something for everybody this November.
Several film-makers, worried about the stiff competition and lack of good theatres have already postponed the release of their films but the stage is set for battle. The number one favourite is Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara which stars Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee. The film is keenly anticipated owing to several factors, first and foremost of which is Chopra's track record and, of course, Shah Rukh Khan. "This is also a Yash Chopra directed film after quite some time so the expectations are sky-high," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh. But K Asif's timeless classic Mughal-e-Azam might provide stiff competition to the movie. "The film has fans across generations and the interest of the parents will also draw the younger generation into theatres," says distributor Sanjay Mehta.
The other two releases, Naach and Aitraaz are also romances but with a twist. While the former, a Ram Gopal Verma film is the love story between a struggling actor and choreographer, the latter is an Abbas-Mustan version of the court room drama Disclosure, where in Priyanka Chopra wrongly alleges Akshay Kumar of sexually harassing her after he rebuffs her advances. Plenty of sizzle in both these films for those who prefer a garam Diwali!
