Diana decides to turn coy
Diana Hayden insists that exposure on screen isn't something that she's comfortable with. If you frown next time you see her in an outfit like the one she's wearing in the picture, dismiss it as an occupational hazard. Kissing may not be "her scene, because the audience isn't ready for it yet" and she may squirm at the thought of doing "cosy love scenes" but she doesn't mind sporting westerns. "My role in my new film Ada is that of a bold woman who's very powerful, oozes sex appeal and needs to look good. So if you see her in slightly more modern clothes than what you've seen, it's because the script demands it," confides Diana.
A former Miss World, she teams up with a Mr World in Anoop Srivastava's Ada, "an exciting role" and even her other film, Ab Bas, is a "social thriller. It's about a woman who's happily married for five years, has a good life and discovers one day that her husband has been cheating on her all those years. She tells herself 'ab bas' and takes control of her life. Character-driven roles are the ones that I want to keep doing."
Diana, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, for a year and did some theatre, feels that "trained actors are always an asset. I know some actors are also spontaneous, but a bit of training always helps. I never lacked confidence as a person, but I didn't want to learn acting at some one else's expense and time."
Beyond film studios Diana seldom socialises with her "colleagues. Some are nice, some are bitchy, but who cares. I am here to work, not make friends. Once the grease paint comes off, I have a life: I read, I watch films and I listen to music. And yes, I do have lots of non-filmi friends. I don't need to hang out with my colleagues."
Unlike most of her contemporaries, Diana is in no tearing hurry at all: "I'd like to work with Ram - gopal Varma and Mani Ratnam one day, but I'm ready to wait."
