Sam's journey into moviedom
(Laughs) I'm not complaining! Who doesn't want to be talked about? My next film, the Sanjay Gupta directed Musafir has me playing a very interesting role so that I guess is the reason. But apart from that, I think that I'm very real and people can sense that. What you see is what you get, so no double talk from me. I don't have starry airs, nor am I too humble - I just believe in being myself and that's what connects with people.
On doing a disappearing act before bagging Musafir:
It was a conscious choice. I went into hiding for quite some time after my debut Maine Dil Tujhko Diya and Darna Mana Hai, because I wanted to make news for something worthwhile, not just because I am an actress. I wanted to come back with a new look, a new image and of course my new exciting film, which is unlike the usual Sameera.
On abandoning her inhibitions:
I've never had any problems with exposing. But I'm clear that I'll do it only when the script demands it. Musafir is not a bold film, it's a classily sexy movie. Besides I have a very well-fleshed out role. Isn't that what matters ultimately? I don't want to do blink-and-you-miss-me parts.
About playing a wanton woman:
I play a Goan girl called Sam (yeah, my real name was shortened so that was cool!) who has mysterious dangerous liaisons. She's bindaas and extremely sensual. In fact, her character is very fun-loving. She's your complete beach babe. There's something so innocent and yet sensual in her.
About her sun-kissed look:
Oh, it's natural! In fact I don't believe in using too much make-up. I'm not your usual gori-chitti. I'm quite dusky and I like to so I don't see why I should not capitalize on that. Of course, shooting in the lovely locales of Goa also gave me this fabulous tan.
On smooching Anil Kapoor and cosying up to Sanjay Dutt:
I was a little uncomfortable at first but once I got into the mood, It was perfectly okay. The smooching was all play-acting and Anil made me very comfortable. It's make believe, you know. As for Sunju, he's a great guy to hang out with. I've known him for a very long time now. He's such a big star but he's got no airs. He took me under his wing completely. He's fun!
On Musafir being over-hyped:
There's no such thing as over-kill in show business. In fact the more hype, the better. Besides Musafir is the kind of dark sensuous film that you haven't seen before in Bollywood. Stylised and classily made, this film will create waves anyway, whether anyone talks about it or not. If anyone loved Kaante, they'll flip for this film.
On her 'affair' with the much-married director Sanjay Gupta:
How does it matter? I care two hoots about what people say. Barking dogs will bark anyway. Sanjay Gupta is one of the best directors we have today and I don't think I should let such matters effect my fabulous working relationship with him. In the end, that's all that matters, I feel.
