Expect for a mimivan ad, we've never seen Bade and Chhote Miyan together in a movie's title credits. But all that changed one chilly October night on a rooftop in Varanasi. When Shaad 'Saathiya' Ali said 'Cut', Amitabh and Abhishek exclaimed: 'Meter down ho gaya' and their first scene together, in Bunty Aur Babli, was canned.
"Frankly, I had no thoughts in my minds besides getting the scene right ," recounts Shaad. How did small B face the pressure? "Abhishek was nervous about shooting in front of his dad. Mr Bachchan was putting him at ease but there's no question the nerves were there." So what is Shaad's USP that he managed to bring both Bachchans together? "The character of Bunty was written keeping Abhishek in mind. It took me just two days to get an OK from Mr Bachchan. I think the script convinced him." And how is it directing the Big B? "He gives you space and is a thorough gentleman."
Shooting for the film was affected by controversy, particularly in Varanasi. "The controversy about Rani's saffron outfit was a non-issue," says Shaad. "I called the local Shiv Sena people over and explained the scene and its relevance, after which they went away pacified." And what of news about Abhishek and Rani planning to tie the Knot? "That happens all the time in the industry so nobody really takes it seriously."
Shaad's 'formula' is rigid. He reveals that, though he "experiments with the script," he is "absolutely clear" about making films for them to be hits. "If my films don't make money, I don't know what I'll do. Perhaps, I'll actually take to seeing milk in Allahabad, as Abhishek said he'd do after watching Mr Bachchan an in Khakee."
