Spunk, sensuality and style, Kareena Kapoor has it all. What she also has in dollops is courage which inspires her to take on roles as varied as that of Poo and Chameli. Adding another feather on her cap is Aitraaz in which she plays a modest wife even as someone else plays the seductress.
What vibes did you share with your co-star Priyanka Chopra during the making of Aitraaz?
Why does everyone think I don't get along with my female co-stars? Priyanka and I hit it off very well. She is a lovely girl. I am glad I did this film with her. Now, I have one more friend in the industry.
Are you slightly envious with Priyanka being touted as the hottest thing in Aitraaz?
Oh, I am tired of being called hot, and glamourous! So this time, I have let her take over that slot, while I have taken a back-seat. Ha, ha!
So the perceived attitude tag is finally wearing off...?
You said it! It was all perceived by the media and people around me. It's just that the media needs some reason to gun you down. I did not go door-to-door with my pictures, neither did I work in B and C grade movies. So when there was nothing else to talk about, they tagged me as arrogant. I guess people take pleasure in reading about rags-to-riches stories. I was born a Kapoor girl - tell me, is that my fault?
So the criticism came for bearing the Kapoor name?
Yes, but there is far more pressure in living up to that name. If any small town girl or a girl from a non-film background acts moderately well in a film, people go berserk praising them. That is because they are treated as underdogs from the beginning. Karisma and I were never treated like underdogs. I think small town girls who come into our industry have it easier.
After the Yaadein experience, did you have any apprehensions about doing a Subhash Ghai movie?
Subhash Ghai signed me on much before Refugee. Infact, he offered me Yaadein even before seeing a single frame of mine. I really respect him. Even if Subhashji asks me to do a walk-on scene for his film, I'll do it. I never forget good deeds, actions or words. It always holds one in good stead.
