From action hero to a versatile actor, Akshay Kumar's journey in Bollywood has been as long as his geographical one from the bylanes of Chandni Chowk to Mumbai to Hong Kong and then back to Mumbai again. The actor who initially, in his own words, signed a lot of films for money has wizened up and how!
From an action hero, you have metamorphosed into a comic guy and the lover boy. How did that happen?
I got bored with the action image. I thought it quite shameful that I am being called only an action hero and I wanted to expand myself. In the past few years, I have tried my hand at different kinds of roles to give the actor within me a free hand. So, if I played the perfect lover boy in Dhadkan, I have also played the perfect villain in Ajnabee, the perfect common man in Hera Pheri, and now the perfect victim in Aitraaz.
You play a man accused of rape by the boss wife in Aitraaz...
I play a guy who works in a mobile company whose life becomes chaotic, when the boss's wife puts a rape case on him. I am a very real guy in this film, who can not do much about the circumstances he has been put in. He has his moments where he cries; he is begging, trying to tell the media and his family that he did not do it. And the only one to hold his hand and bring him out of this mess in his wife.
Quite like the recent real-life story that happened...
I have never begged any body to believe any thing. The controversy is over and done with. It is a thing that went away as fast as it came. It is a part of being in this industry.
Still, there is no smoke without fire...
I don't believe in that. People say whatever they want to say anyway!
You have been linked with most of your actresses...
Controversies are a package deal you enter this industry with. You just have to understand that and accept it. Earlier it was very easy for me, because I was single. But now that I am married, when such controversies come my way, it upsets and angers me. It is all fine as long as you talk and write about my career and my work. But I request a little sensitivity when it comes to my family!
Just because the press linked you with Priyanka, you stepped out of a film you were to do with her. Why go to such extremes when there is no substance to the rumour?
The real reason is that the film has already started rolling and 25 percent of it is already complete. I had to finish Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo, Bewafa and Waqt. I had no choice but to opt out of the film, as I had no dates.
How do you unwind?
All that I look forward to is my son. He is two years old now. After pack up, I wait to get back home. I lie down and he jumps on my chest. And that is my biggest high in life!
