A Fine Balance
There are many adjectives to define Shilpa Shetty ranging from 'drop dead gorgeous' to 'style diva' to 'she of the billion dollar smile.' Considering the fact that she has been around for some time now, dare we also include the term 'senior' to the list now? She smiles softly before saying, "I am in a very exciting phase of my career now. It is almost like a new beginning. Nothing compares the high one gets when people walk upto you and say that they really like your work. It is a nice feeling to be appreciated as an actor rather than just a glam doll."
Indeed since Dhadkan the actress has been trying out different kind of roles though she still has more than a few hit songs to her credit. "I never wanted to be typecast. I always wanted to do different roles and live up to them and hence the decision to take on films like Phir Milenge. Tamanna was a character that does not come along everyday and doing justice to it was a challenge unlike any."
In an industry where every thing is reduced to the numbers game, Shilpa says that she always competes against herself first. "I an always trying to improve on my past performances. That is what is most important to me. I have never been part of the rat race and never will. That way I am grateful to God that I have been able to create a niche for myself."
So when she says she is on a threshold of her career, does it mean that she is planning to get a new identity for herself?
Is she planning to be into parallel cinema? She retorts, "For me there is no segregation between commercial and parallel cinema. I sincerely believe that there are only two kinds of films: good and bad. One should be able to reach out to the masses." But if Shilpa is charting a new course as a critically acclaimed actress, it does not mean she is going to leave behind all that is dear to her. "Dancing is my USP. But I would like to strike a balance between the two - acting and dancing."
And is there any role close to her heart? "I wish I could do something like Naach (which could have utilised her dancing skills.) Also Mughal-e-Azam or the courtesan in Umrao Jaan."
Shilpa will soon be sharing screen space with her younger sister Shamita and is maha excited about it. "She is my strongest critic, always nagging about something or the other. She is very talented but has not got her due yet. As for doing the film together, we play arch rivals on screen." Is it the same way in real life too? "No, we are very close and that is why it makes it more intriguing. We had to put our acting skills to the best for the film," she reveals.
