Priyanka unplugged
Controversy seems to follow Priyanka Chopra these days. After a certain section of the media linked the 22 year old actress with actor Akshay Kumar and debutant actor Harman Baweja, her secretary Prashant Jaju has filed a legal suit against her and now that she's built up the steam in Abbas-Mustan's Aitraaz hitting screens this week, the tongues haven't stopped wagging. Playing an anti-heroine so early in her career hasn't worried her though: "Kajol has done a negative role in Gupt, Shah Rukh Khan rose to superstar dom after Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam," she points out firmly.
Aitraaz, inspired by the Michael Douglas-Demi Moore flick, Disclosure has priyanka do some very bold scenes. "I play the role of Sonia who is very ambitious. She's in love with Akshay (Kumar)'s character, breaks up with him, because she doesn't want to get married. Later, when she's achieved her ambitions, she wants him back, even though he's married. She is obsessed with him. I've also changed my voice to make it seem authentic," Chopra explains. "I've changed my clothes, my look, even the characteristics."
Priyanka insists that she also shares reasonably good vibes with most of her co-stars, even Lara Dutta, her Aitraaz co-star. "I am friends with all co-stars: Kareena, Lara, Preity or Rani. I don't have problems. I even get along famously with Bipasha in Barsaat. Recently I did a series of shows in the US with Rani and we became firm friends."
Priyanka even tells you without batting her eyelid, about how she finds Mallika Sherawat 'sexy'. "I think Mallika is awesome. I just love her interviews. She's such a bold, 'I am what I am' kind of girl. I think it takes a lot of guts to do that! But that doesn't mean I want to do the same myself."
Priyanka seemed to share warm, warm vibes with most male co-stars too. How else does she explain the chemistry with Akshay (first in Andaaz and then in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi)? Even Aitraaz has some red hot sizzling scenes in it. "What you see in the promos are teasers. Don't expect more. It's the story and the treatment that will keep you hooked to the film." If Akshay Kumar walked out of Barsaat it was not because of the ugly rumours, according to Priyanka. "I signed that film a year ago. Finally, when the film was about to start, I could manage the dates, but Akshay had other commitments and Bobby gave bulk dates."
Aitraaz, slated for release on Friday, has been inspired by the Kobe Bryant case, and by Madhur Bhandarkar closer home. Do women in the film industry also take advantage of the situation and harrass men? Priyanks grins: "It depends. Mostly women suffer at least in India. As for women like Sonia, I'm sure there are people like her in real life but I find it tough to believe that Indian women can be so aggressive and selfish. I think in our country men usually tend to take advantage of women. And before you ask I don't want to comment about Preeti Jain or Madhur at all!"
