Yash Chopra's big gamble
Dream merchant Yash Chopra may make one film in seven years (his last film, Dil To Pagal Hai was a commercial success) and when he releases them he definitely ensures that the film is guaranteed a historic opening. Now, for latest release, Veer-Zaara (releasing on November 12) Chopra has taken out a record number of prints - 700 (all over India) and 175-180 (in the Mumbai-Thane region). The last film which had a record number of prints was Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum (600 prints). The industry is abuzz with rumours that Yash Raj Films is imposing conditions on the distributors and multiplex exhibitors in Mumbai, that if they don't dedicate more than one screen to their film, they will not release any print to them. The result is that a multiplex is forced to run the film all through the first week, and as a result Chopra's company stands to make a cool Rs 10 crore, immediately making the film profitable. However, with Rs 125 crore (that's the net price of Aitraaz, Naach, Veer-Zaara and Mughal-e-Azam put together) at stake Diwali, predictably, Yash Chopra wants to take no chances at all. It's another thing altogether that the film is being touted as a potential blockbuster.
