Dance like Chhota B
Poor Abhishek Bachchan. Bollywood's lambi race ka ghoda is raring to go, only once again he has bigger stars to wrest the box-office from this week: Chhota B's Naach hits screens with King Khan Shah Rukh's Veer-Zara, Akshay Kumar's Aitraaz and Mughal-e-Azam's re-run. And with so many big films vying for box-office honours Abhishek isn't going to have an easy run.
For Abhishek though wooing the box-office is important but not "the only thing that makes my world go round. But I'd lying if I said I didn't care about box-office returns, every actor is no matter how many years you've been part of the profession. But Naach is another high point in my life."
Chhota B's tasted commercial success for the first time in Yash Chopra production Dhoom, but like he points out: "Somehow no one seemed to remember it. When a film of mine crashes at the box-office I get whipped for it, when I am part of a hit film it's not mentioned at all. Not that I am complaining one bit, the film industry has always given me a lot of support and believed in me as an actor."
And what about those rave reviews which he got after Mani Ratnam's Yuva? "When I got to do Lallan's role I knew that it would be noticed. Yuva made a significant difference to my career, you learn so much from Mani Sir."
What was working with Ramgopal Varma like? Did Abhishek find it tough to steal the show from Antara Mali, Varma's muse?
"There was no competition between the two of us. Antara is an immensely talented actress and we didn't have a problem working together. Mr Varma is not a director who'll be partial to one star, ultimately the film is important. There were no egos involved at all and it's not like we were measuring our scenes or the length of the roles."
Working with Varma has been "an experience in itself. He's one of the finest directors I've worked with. And before you ask me, the film's not Abhiman revisited. I am a struggling actor in the film and Rewa's (Antara) a dancer. The film is a love story revolving round the two."
The smouldering smooch in Naach didn't give Junior Bachchan uncomfortable moments: "It's part of the film, I didn't see it in isolation. We are professionals and mature adults. There was no need to dissect the scene at all. Antara and I get along famously and we didn't worry too much about the kiss. Will the kiss seal Abhishek's fate today?
