After Anupam Kher was sacked as Censor Board chief, it's now Raveena Tandon's position as chairperson, Children's Film Society of India (CFSI) that's under scrutiny. Appointed to the honorary post last September, Raveena is charged with not attending meetings of the CFSI.
"Five Executive Council meetings and 12 Script Committee meetings have been held since I assumed the post of chairperson, and I've attended all these meetings," says Raveena, backing her claim with documented proof. "Rather than making sweeping statements against me, protocol demands that I be sent a letter first, informing me that there are complaints against me."
Apart from the CFSI chairperson's role, what is also under the spotlight is the question why India still doesn't have a distinctive market for children's films. "Most children's films don't get a commercial release because exhibitors aren't attracted by the ticket price ceiling of Rs 5 and Rs 8. I requested that the ceiling be raised to Rs 15 in cities and Rs 10 in towns," says Raveena.
What exactly ails children's films in India? Commercial directors reportedly steer clear of making movies for children because script and fund clearance takes inordinately long. "Besides, children's films in India are still stuck in the didactic, preaching mode. We need entertaining films that pack a message, but very subtly. One needs to think from a child's point of view. If the film deals with a serious topic, it's best to simplify it and present it in a manner which conveys the message and also engages children," says Raveena.
Among the various steps Raveena claims to have initiated to activate children's films, is making script selection an interactive process. "We hold interactive discussions with the filmmaker. The CFSI has child psychiatrists among its members and they offer suggestions. What is also needed is attractive packaging and efforts are on to sell CFSI films to satellite channels," says Raveena.
