Festivity twice over
As a child, Salman Khan grew up in a multi-religious household surrounded by his Hindu mom Salma's Ganesha idol, visits to the Hanuman temple, namaz and readings of the Quran Sharif by his Muslim father Salim Khan. The belief that everybody shares a common religion was ingrained in him.
Now, celebrating both Diwali and Eid once again in his household, he says, "I see it as God's way of saying we should be together." Salman recalls his childhood days when the Khan family celebrated both religious festivals with equal fanfare. "Diwali was about crackers, phuljaris and homemade sweets. We would have puja at home."
Eid was equally special. "We would wake up early, get dressed and go for namaz. We'd wait for iddies from guests who came visiting. Mom made excellent sheer khurana and biryani," he recalls.
Salman says his family is an example of religious harmony. "Mom and dad have had their disputes but religion was never an issue. With Helen aunty, a Catholic, also being a part of our family, I see a divine message - humanity comes before your religious identity."
