Koena craves for more
A couple of years ago Koena Mitra had no problems sizzling in Road's item act (Sambhal Le...). Just at a time when half of Bollywood had almost branded her as another item girl in the make. Only Koena, a vibrant 20-something insists that chose to stay home and read scripts rather than succumb to the temptation of doing a dance sequence: "I refuse to be just an item girl. The first time I made an exception for Ramgopal Varma, doesn't mean that I would want to do this permanently. That's silly. I didn't come to Mumbai to be part of some dance sequences, any talented dancer can do a better job."
So, now Koena's wrapped up Sanjay Gupta's Musafir, a film where she has a "challenging full-fledged role. I am Anil Kapoor's girlfriend in the film but there's a twist to the tale, she has dark shades. So if people have wondered if I am chewing my words and doing another item act in Musafir, they are wrong, Saaqi is a song shot on me and Sanjay Dutt."
Koena's also got that distinct glint in her eye as she talks about her celluloid date with Ajay Devgan in Rajkumar Santoshi's Sipahi. "It's a great role. If I have an out-and-out glam role in Musafir, then I am the mangalsutra dangling lovey-dovey housewife who is Ajay's emotional anchor. Sipahi promises to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller and I am really grateful that Rajkumarji had faith in me."
Working with Santoshi has changed Koena's career, "I was tired of the glam doll image I seemed to have after Road. People thought I could only carry off the girl with the 'hot bod' look, after Sipahi hits the screens they'll know that I can look convincing even without make-up."
And now all Koena craves for is critical acclaim: "I'm not doing films for only money or glamour. I want people to say that without Koena this film just can't happen."
