Talent & looks - A fine balance
In a year where Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan have claimed reams of newsprint just by their hair-raising celluloid encountres, Anil Kapoor's dramatic makeover in Sanjay Gupta's Musafir has gone almost unnoticed. Bollywood's evergreen eager-to-experiment actor (Lamhe, Virasaat, 1942-A Love Story, Badhai Ho Badhai), Anil confesses that when an actor starts "making waves for his hairdo and looks then he should start worrying. The look is least important, I think actors should concentrate more on their histrionics. I choose not to publicise about my experiments as an actor."
Anil's golden hairstyle, spiked beard and trendy wardrobe isn't all that he wants to talk about: "Musafir is a love story where men play very big roles and the female protagonist is a bold, aggressive woman, and has been shot as a thriller. I do have a very interesting look and a great role." For the first time in his 25-year old film career Anil's buried his differences with Sanjay Dutt for a film. "Well, we are two mature adults and professionals. Neither of us had a public fight, it's just that there were some misunderstandings which we've sorted out. We worked in perfect harmony, you can check out with the others, there were no fireworks."
So, were there fireworks when he locked lips with Sameera Reddy (he's smooched only thrice on screen: Dimple Kapadia in Janbaaz, Madhuri Dixit in Parinda and Manisha Koirala in 1942-A Love Story) in Musafir: "The smooch fits in with the storyline." Anil, who's also wrapped up a Ramgopal Varma production Galti Se, says that life couldn't have been more exciting: "Roles are written specially for me and I don't have to do a film I'm not convinced about. The fact that I can look good even with a 22 year old star like Kareena Kapoor says a lot about my staying power."
