Shilpa dares to be different
Shilpa Shetty insists that a decade after her bimbo act in Baazigar sealed her box-office fate, things have changed considerably. Shilpa may have no problems doing the "glam girl bit" but there's always the "greed to do meaty roles. Ever since Revathy signed me up for Phir Milenge, my first role of substance this year in the middle of Garv I was spoilt. I wanted more from movies and I have a choice."
A little late in life perhaps but is Shilpa going to join the off-beat filmi bandwagon too? "Well, I've been offered some so-called non-glamourous roles which mean I get to wear no make-up, but I am not here to make myself eligible for an award. Awards are encouraging but for me being appreciated by my fans matter more and now I don't want to make mistakes at all," She points out.
So how does she explain her typical mainstream masala act with Salman Khan in Bubby Kent's Shaadi Karke Phaas Gaya Yaar. "Salman and I have a blast working together. He's supported me through very bad times and we owe a lot to each other. We do films sometimes do humour each other. When we did Garv it was clear that I had a small role and it was his film. He did a special role in Phir Milenge for me and in Shaadi.. we are equals. It's a clean, fun film."
Sharing screen space with sister Shamita in Fareb has been another high point in her life. "Shamita is my baby sister and she still looks up to me for a lot of things. We had lovely working vibes naturally and we felt we were at home, only with some more people around us. In Fareb we are two women vying for the love and attention of one man: Manoj Bajpai, so there are some very dramatic scenes."
Shilpa admits that ten years after being part of the glamour brigade, once the make-up comes off she feels distinctly "worried. I get withdrawal symptoms if I am not in a film studio. I love being part of the entertainment industry, it's my life."
