Busy and enjoying it!
Not so long ago, Abhishek Bachchan was mentioned along with his string of flops. Critical claim aside, success seemed to elude him. And then Dhoom happened and Abhishek earned his well deserved place in the Hindi film industry hierarchy.
But all the praise and enviable positioning has only made Abhishek even more modest and guarded. And no, not once in the conversation does the young actor let his guard slip.
Ask him if life has been particularly looking up after the super-duper success of Dhoom and the actor chooses his words carefully, "Let's say life has been busy. It has quite hectic for the last year or so. So it would be appropriate to say that life continues to be busy."
Abhishek is also ready with a generous amount of praise for Ram Gopal Varma. "Ramu gives his actors an immense amount of freedom to interpret a character the way they want," he says. "And his process of involving an actor in everything from the dialouge to the shot-taking makes the job of working with him so satisfying."
Abhishek also feels that Naach is the director's most personal film. "Ramu doesn't agree with me," he laughs, "but I think Naach conveys Ramu's innermost feelings, his insecurities about his craft."
Abhishek also takes a minute to clarify that he had absolutely no problems with Antara Mali on the sets of Naach, as reported in a section of the media. "Antara is one of the best performers we have. She's so polished," he says. "And she keeps you constantly on your toes because you never know what she will do next. I shared a good working relationship with her."
Point noted, we move to sarkar, in which Ram Gopal Varma directs Abhishek and his father in their first-ever appearance together. "Sarkar is a very memorable film for me," emphasises Abhishek. But ask him what the experience was like and he groans, "Nerve-wracking! It was all that I thought it would be and 10 times worse. I couldn't get over the fact that I was sharing the frame with Amitabh Bachchan and I was nervous as hell in front of the camera. We shot together for four days and with each passing day, I thought things would improve. But they didn't. I don't think I can ever stand unaffected if I'm in the same frame as him. Now I understand what a lot of friends meant when they told me they'd get speechless when they were in the same frame as dad. At that time, I'd think, 'What are they fussing about? Its just Dad.' Now I can tell you its scary."
