'Method acting is not for me!'
When Rituparno Ghosh narrated the script of Raincoat to Ajay Devgan over the telephone, the actor took all of five minutes to say yes to the project. "It is the most beautiful love story I have ever heard," says Ajay. "It's about a character who has never been successful in life - professionally as well as personally. He makes a last attempt to go back to the city to achieve what he wants."
For an emotional film, wouldn't the title, Raincoat prove confusing? "The story happens on a rainy afternoon," reveals Devgan. "And a raincoat plays a central part in the film." From action capers to emotional dramas, Ajay has excelled at everything. And yet, for someone who has delivered fine-tuned performances, Ajay doesn't believe in method acting. "I just do things spontaneously. Method acting doesn't work for me," he claims.
So the actor in him is finally getting restless, urging him to take on challenging roles as that of a mentally challenged father in Harry Baweja's Main Aisa Hi Hoon and Rituparno's Raincoat? "I think it is right to take up something like this at this point in my career," insists Ajay, "where I can experiment with different roles."
He must miss beating up the baddies though? "Not at all," laughs the actor. "I think it is more comfortable working in films like Raincoat, because you don't need so much physical energy. Sometimes it is good to be lazy."
Lazy? Was that a mood he could have enjoyed with Rituparno Ghosh around? "For me he is a very good director," says Ajay seriously. "He understands cinema well. There is a lot of realism, a lot of pain, and he is adept at exploring small nuances in a relationship. And art is the same everywhere, be it Bollywood or Kolkata."
And with some hard-hitting roles in the future, Ajay is all set to rain down on audiences with some great performances. The deadly Devgan is certainly back in action! Even on lazy, wet afternoons.
