Will King Khan match Big B's record?
Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood's undisputed box-office badshah may hate tags but chances are he just might get himself another one. Now that Main Hoon Na and Veer-Zaara, two of the biggest hits this year have already created enough big bucks (Veer-Zaara, in fact, is likely to be the biggest Hindi film in the US/UK and has earned to the tune of Rs 11 crore and Rs 12.3 crore respectively already), trade pundits are optimistic about Shah Rukh's third release: Swades, directed by Ashutosh Lagaan Gowarikar.
If, Swades stirs the box office, then SRK would have pulled off a hat-trick of sorts, a feat achieved so far only by Amitabh Bachchan in 1978 when three of his films: Don, Trishul and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar turned out to be the biggest grossers of the year.
So can SRK achieve this mission impossible? Gowarikar, insists that he never makes films "for records. Swades was a film that I wanted to make before Lagaan and it is relevant today and tomorrow. If it becomes a commercial success I'll be happy naturally."
Shah Rukh, however, admits that playing the "ordinary guy is always a challenge. Mohan Bhargava is an NRI, a successful man who doesn't mind turning his back on a lucrative life to better the life of his native village. If more NRIs find the film inspiring we'll consider our job done. Sure, the film's commercial success will, of course, benefit me as an actor. A hit is something that an actor constantly needs."
And to think that Shah Rukh had almost lost the role to Hrithik Roshan, who was apparently Gowarikar's first choice for Swades! But Shah Rukh wanted to make up for the lost opportunity (for those notclued in he was Gowarikar's first choice for Lagaan) and reoportedly not only gave Gowarikar bulk dates but also cut down on his fee to do the film.
And if Swades does mint money at the box-office, then where would SRK go from here?
For someone who's already a superstar, does it mean the actor will hike his fees further? While King Khan isn't telling, according to good friend Karan Johar, "SRK will still do his two films a year. He isn't an actor who bothers about the number game now."
But when you are No.1 can you afford to be unaffected?
