King Khan gets a Dubai address
Soon Shah Rukh Khan will hold infinity in The Palm of his hands. The Bollywood megastar has expressed a desire to live in Dubai, "one of my family's favourite places to visit", and more specifically at The Palm - the upcoming dream residential township. Shaped like a palm leaf, The Palm is spread delicately over an area bigger than that of Paris or Manhattan, is envisioned for the Rich and the Famous, and built on reclaimed land around Dubai.
Of course, the star burst at The Palm is going to come for a price for King Khan - a few million bucks at least, and we are talking about the green back. With this, SRK joins the premierleague: football's fave pin-up boy David Beckham is going to be his neighbour in the palm-fringed landscape.
The Palm project is expected to be completed by the end of 2006, and is the brainchild of the Nakheel group, Dubai's largest property developers and the men behind most of the cityscape's wonders: the Jumeirah Islands, The Gardens, the Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall, the Jumeirah Lake Towers, the International City, Jumeirah Village, The Lost City, the Dubai Design Centre and Discovery Gardens.
The group is also riding on a high of expats coming to Dubai - with a view to settle down. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, executive chairman, Nakheel, said, "Dubai is, fast replacing Spain as the destination."
And talking to HT, Robert Lee, director development, Nakheel, promised that India is very much on the city's radar. "We are thinking about ways to attract more Indian investment," he said. But, as usual, what we can do, the Chinese do better. Nakheel has just strengthened the China syndrome in Dubai: in collaboration with Chinamex Middle East Investment and Trade Promotion Centre, it inaugurated the Dragon Mart earlier this month at the International City, the industrial township created by Nakheel just 12 kms outside Dubai.
The mart will be the largest trading hub for everything of Chinese origin in the world. "Chinese products and services have become an indelible part of international trade and commerce, synonymous with quality and the value for money they offer," said Sulayem.
