It's raining roles for Ajay
After being in the industry for more than a decade (13 years to be precise), Ajay Devgan does not get carried away by hits and flops anymore. Al least that's what he says. His next release Rituparno Ghosh's Raincoat arrived countrywide yesterday.
Ajay admits that the commercial success of his film does bother him but not to the extent "of stopping me from choosing a variety of roles" and constantly taking on "new challenges."
In order to agree with him, you need to take a closer look at Raincoat where he plays the role of a man who's a loser in life, someone who loses even the love of his life. Does he relate to the character? "Of course, I can. I've seen so many people who can never be successful no matter how hard they try. I've seen aggressive people calming down with time," he answers adding in the same breath that he himself was asked by his director to look less intimidating.
Getting into the skin of a character is Ajay's way, be it a sex comedy like Masti or a film dealing with as serious issue as college politics in Yuwa. That explains why the actor who chosses his films by "instinct" has no room for regrets whatsoever. "I look at the producer and the director and see how the film will be presented before I say 'yes' to it. I loved the script of Yuwa (which flopped at the box office) and liked it when I saw the complete film. I believe one should do his job and leave the rest to destiny," he says.
But is Ajay being selective, or we should say experimental? "Like any other actor, I prefer to do all kinds of roles so that I can enjoy what I'm doing. I'm someone who needs variety otherwise I get bored even while I'm shooting for a film." For Ajay Raincoat was an "enjoyable experience", especially as he shares a "comfortable working rapport" with his Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam co-star Aishwarya Rai. "She has excelled herself in the film," he adds.
After Raincoat, Ajay has Harry Baweja's untitled film in which he's playing a very interesting character of a "mentally challenged man" and Prakash Jha's Apaharan in his kitty. With no plans of getting into any other aspect of filmmaking as of yet, Ajay just wants to continue acting and loves 'chilling out with my family' in whatever free time he gets.
