Rani in Black and white
Yuva, Hum Tum and Veer-Zaara the year 2004 was Rani Mukherji's year. And now with the release of Black this week, she is all set to create movie magic as the blind-deaf-mute Michelle who challenges destiny. She talks about her most challenging role so far:
The promos of Black give the viewer goosebumps. What do you think?
People have come up to me and said that Black looks out of this world. The entire credit goes to Sanjay. Black is his vision. Sanjay has made even a subject like Black look so desirable.
Your role is loosely modelled on Helen Keller. Tell us about your character of Michelle.
Sanjay narrated the story of Black in June 2003. My first reaction was, "I don't want to do it!'
That was your first reaction...?
Yes. Simply because I couldn't imagine living up to the role. Add to that I had no reference for the character. Here was a deaf, blind and mute girl. But Sanjay was confident that I could play Michelle.
Michelle must have been a lot of sweet...
Absolutely. I took lessons in sign language. Workshops were held at Sanjay's house. I would recite poems in sign language in order to gain fluency over the medium.
What excited, as well as terrified, you about playing Michelle?
