Hollywood's poor cousin
Well known personalities from the media from India and around the world expounded on the 'need of the hour' at the inauguration of FICCI Frames 2005 in Mumbai recently. Yash Chopra and Amitabh Bachchan, representing the Indian film industry, presented their progressive views on the film industry and its prospects. "While Hollywood produces about 200 films annually, the Indian film industry makes over 800 films a year," Mr Bachchan pointed out in his inaugural address, and said that it was time Indian cinema unshackled itself from restrictive mind sets and opened up to new thought processes to ensure a fresher outlook. Several speakers also pointed out the effectiveness of the Internet as a new medium to spread awareness about films all across the world. While Hollywood spends a significant part of its resources on publicising its films on the Net, they suggested that Indian producers need to realise that they are lagging behind.
